Georgia The Mysterious Cave City of Uplistsikhe and Gori

1 day

Immerse yourself in ancient history when you visit the mysterious cave city of Uplistsikhe and in the era of Stalinism at the Museum of this leader of the people. For an additional fee you can even visit the colorful Georgian wineries and taste their delicious wine.

For your convenience - the tour will start with pick-up from the hotel in Tbilisi.

Your tour begins with the ancient city of Uplistsikhe; it is one of the first human settlements in Georgia, believed to have begun more than a thousand year before our time. There is thought to have once been seven hundred caves in the complex but of them only 150 can be visited today. The name of the city means 'God's Fortress, this is very symbolic! In the complex, you will see living quarters, wine cellars, altars, churches, ruins of ancient pagan temples and even a pharmacy of herbs with an open stone bathtub. This area is still not completely investigated - there are conserved parts that are being subject to scientific study which is slowly opening up their secrets.

From there we move to the city of Gori.

We will visit the city's main attraction - the house/museum of Joseph Stalin founded in 1951. The initial part of the house, built in the Gothic style, will take you back in time to more than 50 years ago. You will see the furniture of that time in his office; there are paintings, photographs, documents, the death mask of the leader and a personal coach used by him back in 1941.  Also make sure to look at the modern wooden house, which in December 1879 became the birthplace of the former dictator. After you spend time in this museum you will realize the immense power of this leader and how our reality has turned it into nothing forever - as Stalin died on the 5th of March 1953 and was later convicted of his personality cult.

Now we transfer to Tbilisi.

For an addition fee (depending on the number of participants, please inquire about cost separately) you may have the opportunity, on the way back to Tbilisi, to visit with a winemaker. Here, you can not just learn about the history of Georgian wine, but also experience it with a tour of an ancient wine cellar and tastings of wines made with the old methods that are passed down from generation to generation.
